Bouwhelmen met bril of zonder? Overweeg eerst de risico's
Een industriële veiligheidshelm, ook vaak bouwhelm genoemd, is een persoonlijk beschermingsmiddel dat het hoofd beschermt tegen een groot aantal gevaren. Het is dan ook belangrijk om een bouwhelm te kopen die bij de aanwezige risico’s past. Breng dus van tevoren eerst goed de risico’s in kaart, voordat je een bouwhelm kiest. Gaat het vooral om bescherming tegen stoten en klappen? Dan is een standaard bouwhelm vaak voldoende. Krijgt je werknemer ook te maken met bijvoorbeeld het spatgevaarvan warm materiaal of chemicaliën? Dan is het belangrijk dat de helm ook hittebestendig is. Of dat je kiest voor een bouwhelm met bril. Waar moet een veiligheidshelm aan voldoen?
Een goede veiligheidshelm moet aan verschillende eisen voldoen om ook de juiste bescherming te bieden. Onderstaand de belangrijkste eisen op een rij:
- Materiaal
Een industriële veiligheidshelm moet gemaakt zijn van duurzame materialen. Dit betekent dat de kwaliteit van het materiaal hoogwaardig blijft bij normaal gebruik. De meeste soorten bouwhelmen zijn gemaakt van thermoplasten of duroplasten. De reden hiervoor is de niet-geleidende eigenschap van kunststof. Daarnaast moet het materiaal aan de binnenkant niet voor irritatie aan het hoofd zorgen. In de norm EN 397 staan de exacte eisen aan veiligheidshelmen. - Uitvoering
Je kan kiezen uit verschillende uitvoeringen. De bol of helmschaal van een helm is over het algemeen voorzien van versterkingsribben en ventilatieopeningen. Daarnaast hebben ook zaken zoals de vorm, gewicht en weerstand invloed. Als algemene regel geldt dat de helm 90% van de impact van de valenergie moet opnemen. - Opbouw
Het gevaar waartegen de helm moet beschermen is belangrijk voor de opbouw van de helm. Hetzelfde geldt voor comfort. Dit betekent dat de buitenzijde van de bouwhelm bestaat uit een helmschaal met een rondlopende brede rand of klep. Aan de binnenzijde moeten de hoofdband en achterhoofdband instelbaar zijn. Dit zorgt voor een goede pasvorm en voldoende ruimte rondom het hoofd. De eisen aan deze vrije ruimte vind je ook in de EN 397 richtlijnen.
Wat is de levensduur van een veiligheidshelm
De exacte levensduur van een veiligheidshelm of bouwhelm hangt onder andere af van de intensiteit van het gebruik en de werkomstandigheden. In praktijk gaat een werkhelm van thermoplastisch materiaal drie tot vijf jaar mee. Hierbij moet wel rekening gehouden worden met het volgende:
- De inwerking van zonlicht. Dit kan de kwaliteit beïnvloeden.
- Heeft de bouwhelm een flinke impact te verduren gekregen? Vervang hem dan meteen.
- Ga je bouwhelmen kopen? Bekijk dan ook de veiligheidshelm accessoires. Denk aan gehoorkappen, voeringen en gezichtsschermen.
